About Amanda Shanks Counseling

I understand how frightening and uncomfortable it can be to reach out to a complete stranger for help and support, and oftentimes, the first phone call is the most difficult step.  I believe in the transformative power of the therapeutic relationship and I create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental atmosphere which allows each client the space to be heard, to heal, and to move forward.  Recognizing that every client is unique, I use a strengths-based and supportive approach to assist my clients in accomplishing their goals while acknowledging that each client is his or her own expert. You ARE capable of creating meaningful and lasting change.

After completing my undergraduate degree at Virginia Commonwealth University, I earned my Master of Arts in Community Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  I have worked in several community mental health settings which provided me invaluable experience working with diverse populations and a wide range of presenting issues and concerns.  For the last five years, I have worked in private practice at Cameron Valley Psychotherapy and Counseling Associates in Charlotte, NC, providing therapy to clients experiencing significant life transitions, general depression and anxiety, and clients seeking career counseling.  In addition, I have received specialized training in Reproductive and Maternal Mental Health, which includes issues surrounding infertility, unplanned pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss, postpartum adjustment, and postpartum depression and anxiety.
